Spryfield Forgets How to Score; Madison Finds the Checkbook

Week-to-date figures as of Friday afternoon. Period 2 runs Mon Oct 5 through Sun Oct 11. Please keep your hats and arms inside the standings at all times.

Last Week Versus This Week: A Study in Humility

Spryfield Winning Streaks. Last week they hung 121.75 on the board like a prize marlin and strutted down Main Street. This week they've got 49.25 and trail Milton by twenty. Ilya Shesterkin, who put up 29.75 last week, still has a game tonight at Washington, so the marlin may yet be revived. Folks are already asking whether the team name was a promise or a dare.

Madison Millionaires. Last week they lost 85.25 to 106.75 and had to settle for the best losing score in the league, which is a bit like winning Best Dressed at your own foreclosure. This week they've already passed last week's total with 92.25, and Weston sits at 50.75. Evan Bouchard went from 37 points to a merely excellent 17, Jason Robertson chipped in 15, and Jeremy Swayman added 14. Waiver claim Gabriel Vilardi arrived Wednesday. The Millionaires are finally acting like it.

Weston Steamrollers. Last week they gave up 121.75 to Spryfield and steamrolled nothing but their own dignity. This week they're down 41.5 to Madison. Connor McDavid has slid from 29.75 to 11.25, which is still more than most of you, but nobody's printing his name on the front page. Weston has five players going tonight, so the rally committee is in session.

Ancaster Avalanche. Last week they put up 106.75 and rolled right over Madison. This week they're buried under 49.25 against North York's 71.5. They do have six players in action tonight, including Ovechkin, Malkin, and Letang, so it's a fine night for nostalgia and possibly a comeback.

Oakville Acorns. They had 94.75 last week and already have 97.5 this week, the best mark in the league. Jack Eichel leads them with 21. Oakville sits first in the standings and seems to have no interest in giving it up.

Grimsby Guzzlers. Last week they downed 100.5 points in one gulp. This week they have 82.25 and still trail Oakville by 15.25. They're drinking at a respectable clip, but the Acorns have the deeper glass.

Regina Grizzlies. Last week they scored 65.5, the league's lowest. This week they have 13.5. Since Monday they've made seven transactions, four of them on Friday afternoon alone, trading players like baseball cards in a schoolyard. William Eklund was cut at 4:30 PM ET. Brudenell is only ahead 34.75 to 13.5, so the Grizzlies are still breathing, if only barely.

Brudenell Black Hawks. Last week they managed 71.75 and lost to Grimsby by nearly thirty. This week they have 34.75, which is modest, but they are facing Regina, so it is also a 21-point lead. Shane Walker leads the charge with 13.25. The Black Hawks have discovered the oldest trick in the sport: schedule the Grizzlies.

Hamilton Five Hole. Last week they won with 84.75. This week they're at 34.5 against London's 72. The name is starting to read less like a joke and more like a confession.

London Knights. Last week they lost 76.75 to Oakville. This week they already have 72, with Tim Stutzle leading at 19.25. The Knights have climbed back on the horse and are now cantering.

Halifax Hurricanes. Last week's 66.5 was more of a light drizzle. This week's 76.25 is a genuine squall, but they trail Summerside by just 1.25 in the tightest matchup in the league.

Summerside Sea Dawgs. They're 77.5 to 76.25 against Halifax, which is about as close as it gets. They also grabbed Connor Hellebuyck off waivers on Friday morning, after Weston had cut him Wednesday to make room for a defenseman. One team's trash is a Sea Dawg's buried treasure.

Milton Maniacs. They scored 77 last week and have 69.25 this week, with Linus Ullmark in net and Auston Matthews scoring. They're quietly beating the defending point champions, which takes some nerve.

North York Shire Pudding. They scored 71 last week and already have 71.5 this week, thanks to Jake Oettinger posting a 25.75 performance. The pudding has set.

Hairy Giant Spotted Minding Net in Rocky Mountain Wilderness

A seven-foot creature, covered in hair, photographed by a trapper

Trappers working the high passes report a seven-foot creature, covered head to toe in hair, stopping every puck fired at it on a frozen mountain pond. Scouts from Weston were dispatched at once and returned with frostbite and a signed affidavit. The creature reportedly refused all contract terms but accepted a sandwich. Witnesses describe its save percentage as "unknowable but excellent." Hamilton has already asked the league office whether it could be acquired before Saturday. The league office is consulting a zoologist.

Swamp Creature Signs Professional Contract; Agent Faints

A dripping creature from the bog, wearing skates

Residents near Ancaster watched in horror as a dripping thing rose from the bog, laced up a pair of skates, and demanded ice time. Management, never one to look a gift monster in the mouth, produced a contract on the spot. It was signed in what witnesses believe was moss. The creature's agent fainted and has not been revived. The team trainer reports the locker room "has never smelled worse, and that is saying something."

Weekend Watch

Summerside and Halifax, separated by 1.25 points, contest the issue along the boards while the referee consults his conscience.

Summerside versus Halifax, with a 1.25-point gap, is a coin toss at the county fair. Grimsby versus Oakville at 82.25 to 97.5 is close enough to stay interesting. Milton versus Spryfield will tell us whether last week's champions are in a slump or have retired. Ancaster has six skaters going tonight, so North York shouldn't count its pudding yet.

Closing Jab

Last week Spryfield was the toast of the town. This week they're the crumbs. Enjoy the weekend, gentlemen, and please, somebody check on Regina.

A Message from the League President

Portrait of the League President
The Hon. League President, photographed moments after approving his own waiver claim.

FELLOW SPORTSMEN,

It has come to my attention that several of you have been setting your lineups after the puck drops. I want to be clear: this is not a crime. It is merely a sin, and I am not your priest.

The league office has received eleven complaints this week, nine of them about the scoring system and two about my moustache, which I do not have. Both matters have been referred to a committee, which is also me.

Effective immediately, any manager caught dropping a starting goaltender on a Wednesday will be required to explain himself to the Summerside Sea Dawgs, who are now very comfortable and do not wish to be disturbed.

Lastly, to the Regina front office: the Add/Drop button is not a telegraph. Please stop tapping it in Morse code. We received 'SOS' twice on Friday and the second one was a defenseman.

Yours in sport and mild disappointment,
THE PRESIDENT
North American Hockey League
